Septic Sytem Maintenance - Garbage Disposals

Do I really need this?

Let's be clear - we recommend that you remove the garbage disposal if you have one.

The Septic tank is designed to capture normal size food waste.  Garbage disposals macerate the sink waste in to very fine particles that float right through the tank and into the drainfield. Over time, repeated use of the garbage disposal may plug the drainfield.  Typically, the drainfield is the most costly part of the system to replace.

If you can't live without a garbage disposal we recommend the following:

  • installation of a septic tank outlet filter to help capture these fine particles (in the septic tank) and
  • frequent pumping of the septic tank (once a year or sooner).

These precautions may help your drainfield last longer.
