Septic System Percolation (Perk) Tests
Septic system soil evaluators are typically certified by the State to evaluate site soils and other site features relative to siting a septic system disposal area. In some regions the soil evaluation is conducted by a regional health agent. Soil evaluations are often referred to as Perc (Perk) Tests and may include:
- Percolation Tests ("Perc/Perk Tests") to evaluate the rate at which water moves through the soil;
- Deep Holes (test pits) to evaluate soil structure, seasonal high water table, and capacity to accept/treat wastewater; and/or
- Soil sampling for laboratory analyses.
Typically, a soil evaluator is hired to evaluate whether the site is suitable for a septic system prior to site development or conducting a septic system repair.
